Edinburgh Sheriffs<br \/>\nCourt ruled that the landlord must pay the tenants \u00a33,450 for failing to<br \/>\nprotect their deposit, which is three times the amount of the original<br \/>\ndeposit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BBC News Report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A leading housing charity, Shelter Scotland, has welcomed the decision from<br \/>\nthe court. They say it sends out a warning to other landlords about the perils<br \/>\nof not abiding by the deposit protection law.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement made to the BBC, the Director of Shelter Scotland said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The tenancy deposit scheme is a transparent and fair system brought in last<br \/>\nyear under a fanfare of publicity and awareness, so there is no reason why any<br \/>\nlandlord in Scotland should be failing to protect their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.property_guarantors.html#watch-demo-anchor\">tenants&#8217; deposits<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis is a landmark ruling that should inspire confidence in all those tenants<br \/>\nwho fear their deposit is not being protected to take action and should act as<br \/>\na strong warning to all landlords who are not protecting their tenants&#8217;<br \/>\ndeposits to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warning to Landlords<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So landlords beware: if you fail to protect your tenants&#8217; deposits, you, too,<br \/>\ncould end up on the wrong side of the law!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In what is believed to be the first prosecution of its kind, an Edinburgh landlord has been ordered to pay a hefty sum to his former tenants for failing to protect their deposit.
