At the time he justified his decision by telling<br \/>\nreporters it was a business decision based on financial reasons, but in<br \/>\nthe wake of a flood of criticism calling him &#8216;heartless&#8217;, he has hit<br \/>\nback at his critics by saying:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fergus Wilson Hits Back<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;If I am heartless all the other landlords are heartless, because we&#8217;re<br \/>\nall doing the same,&#8221; he said. &#8220;All the landlords will tell you that<br \/>\nthere is so much default now with housing benefit tenants that you are<br \/>\njust simply better off with somebody working.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wilson did confess to Channel 4 News that he felt guilty about the<br \/>\npeople he was evicting, even going as far as to suggest that &#8220;some could<br \/>\nbe in dire circumstances&#8221;, but it hasn&#8217;t changed his mind about the<br \/>\ndecision. He remains adamant that things can&#8217;t go on with more than 50%<br \/>\nof his welfare tenants in arrears, which is something that an awful lot<br \/>\nof landlords will probably be able to empathise with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No DSS Tenants<\/strong><br \/>\nWilson isn\u2019t the only landlord who doesn\u2019t want <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.lha_tenants.html#watch-demo-anchor\">housing benefit tenants<\/a><br \/>\nand many letting agents make a point of saying &#8216;NO DSS&#8217; in their<br \/>\nadvertising materials. Indeed, the NLA reported in December that only 1<br \/>\nin 5 of landlords questioned were willing to rent to tenants in receipt<br \/>\nof benefits, although in some parts of the UK, landlords don&#8217;t have much<br \/>\nchoice because working tenants are few and far between.<\/p>\n<p>Landlords: is your experience of welfare tenants good or bad?
