The report argues, amongst other things, that if fees are<br \/>\neradicated, the private rental sector will improve. They also suggest that the<br \/>\ngovernment should offer landlords tax breaks if they make an effort to improve<br \/>\nthe quality of their accommodation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chartered Institute of Housing Recommendations<\/strong><br \/>\nThe main recommendations of the report by the Chartered Institute of Housing<br \/>\ninclude:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>creation of a set of minimum standards covering management and standards of rental property;<\/li>\n<li>extend regulation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.create_letting_agent.html#watch-demo-anchor\">letting agents<\/a> and estate agents to prevent them from charging tenants fees;<\/li>\n<li>offer landlords tax incentives for housing improvements; and<\/li>\n<li>development of a set of accreditation standards for rental properties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWith more and more people living in the private rented sector \u2013 including more<br \/>\nolder people, more families with children and more vulnerable people from the<br \/>\nhousing waiting list \u2013 it\u2019s vital that we look at new ways to raise standards,\u201d<br \/>\nsays CIH CEO Grainia Long. \u201cThe cost of housing means that for many people,<br \/>\nthe private rented sector is the only option, but too many of them are having<br \/>\nto put up with poor standards and insecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chartered Institute of Housing says the rental sector has doubled in size<br \/>\nin the last twenty years \u2013 it now accounts for 18% of housing in the UK.<br \/>\nUnfortunately many rental properties fail to meet modern standards and are long<br \/>\noverdue improvements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent report published by the Chartered Institute of Housing in conjunction with the Resolution Foundation is calling for letting agents to stop charging tenants fees.
