{"id":1347,"date":"2014-09-22T11:04:28","date_gmt":"2014-09-22T11:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1347"},"modified":"2014-09-22T11:04:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-22T11:04:28","slug":"nla-criticises-croydon-councils-tenant-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/blog\/nla-criticises-croydon-councils-tenant-tax.html","title":{"rendered":"NLA Criticises Croydon Council\u2019s \u2018Tenant Tax\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Landlords Association (NLA) has warned Croydon Council that their plans<br \/>\nto extend the current landlord licensing scheme to include all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.hmo_multi_let.html#watch-demo-anchor\">landlords<\/a> will deter<br \/>\nlandlord investment in the area and force existing landlords to raise rents in order<br \/>\nto cover rising costs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Increased Landlord Costs<\/strong><br \/>\nThe current landlord licensing scheme in Croydon only applies to landlords with Houses<br \/>\nof Multiple Occupation (HMOs), but the council has begun to consult on new proposals<br \/>\nthat will extend the scheme to all homes in the private rental sector. If the scheme<br \/>\ngoes ahead, landlords will face increased costs of up to \u00a31,000 per property, which<br \/>\nthey will have to pass on to their tenants. The proposal will also force landlords to<br \/>\ntake responsibility for managing anti-social behaviour and monitoring visitors to<br \/>\ntheir properties.<\/p>\n<p>The NLA, along with local MP, Gavin Barwell, are strongly opposed to the scheme and<br \/>\nare urging landlords and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.tenant_documents.html#watch-demo-anchor\">tenants<\/a> to attend a meeting on 25 September to discuss the<br \/>\nmatter. Croydon Council representatives have also been invited to attend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Landlord Stealth Tax<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cIt doesn\u2019t take a genius to work out what will happen if this scheme goes ahead &#8211;<br \/>\nlandlords will simply pass the additional cost on to their tenants. It is a classic<br \/>\nLabour stealth tax that is predicted to raise over \u00a34.5 million for the council,<br \/>\nlifted straight from the pockets of hardworking residents.
