Overspending at<br \/>\nChristmas often leads to hefty bills come January, all at a time when the<br \/>\nweather is cold and the heating is on more than usual. But thankfully for<br \/>\nlandlords in the private sector, it isn\u2019t all doom and gloom as figures<br \/>\nindicate that overall <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.rent_arrears.html#watch-demo-anchor\">rent arrears<\/a> have actually fallen for the first time<br \/>\nin a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Times are tough for tenants<\/strong><br \/>\nThe cost of living has been increasing steadily since the start of the<br \/>\nrecession. Food, fuel, rent and pretty much everything is now much more<br \/>\nexpensive than it was twelve months ago. Naturally this has led to a rise in<br \/>\nthe number of tenants owing more than two months rent as more and more<br \/>\npeople struggle to find the cash to pay their bills. Christmas and New Year<br \/>\nis traditionally the worst time for rent arrears since many tenants<br \/>\nprioritise their Christmas spending over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.automatic_rent_payments.html#watch-demo-anchor\">paying the rent<\/a>, probably in the<br \/>\nhope that their landlord will take pity on them because it\u2019s Christmas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More jobs available<\/strong><br \/>\nExperts believe that the dramatic fall in unemployment figures at the back<br \/>\nend of last year is largely responsible for the fall in rent arrears. A more<br \/>\nbuoyant jobs market means that fewer tenants are out of work and therefore<br \/>\nunable to pay the rent. However, despite the decrease in the number of<br \/>\ntenants falling into rent arrears, the number of landlords struggling to pay<br \/>\ntheir buy to let mortgages is increasing, which is not good news for the<br \/>\nprivate rental sector.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Year for most people is a time of doom and gloom.
