Apparently more than half of<br \/>\ntenants renting properties in Scotland have no idea that tenant<br \/>\ndeposit schemes even exist. 55% of those polled claimed to be unaware<br \/>\nof the scheme and 76% said they didn&#8217;t know deposits needed to be<br \/>\nplaced in such a scheme. Less than 20% were also unaware that their<br \/>\ndeposits needed to be placed in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.property_guarantors.html#watch-demo-anchor\">deposit scheme<\/a> no later than May<br \/>\n15.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concern about the lack of awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By the time the May deadline rolls around, all Scottish landlords in<br \/>\nthe private sector must have lodged eligible deposits. But the<br \/>\nauthors of the survey, SafeDeposits Scotland, have expressed concern<br \/>\nabout the low levels of awareness from tenants.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At a time when the private rented sector is growing, we need to<br \/>\nprovide safe, secure renting. And the new tenancy deposit protection<br \/>\nlegislation goes some way towards this, but only if tenants know<br \/>\nabout their rights,&#8221; said Rebecca Johnston, director of operations at<br \/>\nSafeDeposits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scottish government pledges to increase awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Scottish government claims the tenancy deposit scheme has been a<br \/>\nhuge success so far and around 112,000 deposits had been protected by<br \/>\nthe scheme. However, they do add that,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will continue to work with the three approved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.property_guarantors.html#watch-demo-anchor\">tenancy deposit <\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.property_guarantors.html#watch-demo-anchor\">schemes<\/a> &#8211; who have a legal responsibility to promote their schemes &#8211;<br \/>\nto increase understanding and awareness of the schemes amongst<br \/>\ntenants, landlords and their agents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully awareness amongst tenants increases before the May when<br \/>\ndeposits are legally obliged to be deposited in a protection scheme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent survey carried out in Scotland has revealed some startling information according to the BBC.
