The<br \/>\ninformation came from Mr Byrne, Labour&#8217;s Shadow Work and Pension<br \/>\nSecretary, at the same time as Ed Milliband prepares to make a speech<br \/>\noutlining how Labour will be seeking to curb welfare spending.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crackdown on Private Landlords<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people say to us why are we spending \u00a324 billion on housing<br \/>\nbenefit \u2013 a lot of that money is going to private landlords,&#8221; Mr<br \/>\nByrne told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t we give local councils the power to bring down the cost of<br \/>\nrents, particularly in the private rented sector, and use some of<br \/>\nthose savings to actually build more social housing? That would stop<br \/>\nthe housing benefit bill going up and up and up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big Spenders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Labour has a reputation for being the last of the big spenders, so Ed<br \/>\nMilliband is trying to get away from that negative image. In line<br \/>\nwith the current government, Labour is now willing to concede that<br \/>\nwelfare spending needs to be brought under control and capping<br \/>\nhousing benefit costs is one way to do this. Since a large proportion<br \/>\nof <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/video.lha_tenants.html#watch-demo-anchor\">housing benefit payments<\/a> go to private landlords, the private<br \/>\nrental sector may well take a hit if Labour are voted into power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contributory Principle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another one of Labour&#8217;s ideas is to give those who have a history of<br \/>\nwork a higher level of benefit payment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An article in the Telegraph yesterday suggests that if Labour comes back into power, they will introduce caps on rents in the private sector in a bid to curtail the continually rising welfare bill.
