The issue first came to light in the Queen&#8217;s speech at<br \/>\nthe beginning of the month and it looked like being a major pain for<br \/>\nlandlords across the UK. Landlords faced huge fines if they ended up<br \/>\nletting properties to illegal immigrants. If the plan had gone ahead,<br \/>\nit would have become a bureaucratic nightmare for landlords.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the change?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This change has come about because the government is apparently<br \/>\nconcerned that ordinary landlords would have become bogged down in an<br \/>\ninordinate amount of red tape. The Communities department, run by<br \/>\nEric Pickles, was concerned about the &#8220;unfair administrative burden&#8221;<br \/>\nlandlords would have to bear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The unwanted effect of immigration checks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inevitably the cost of performing checks on a potential tenant&#8217;s<br \/>\nimmigration status would have been passed on by landlords, so rents<br \/>\nwould have to go up as a result. There was also a concern that such<br \/>\nchanges would discourage <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertyportfoliosoftware.co.uk\/index.php?cmd=videos&amp;prod=lpm\">new landlords<\/a> from investing in the buy to<br \/>\nlet market, and with so many councils reliant on housing in the<br \/>\nprivate rental sector, this would have been a disaster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Immigration checks to go ahead in some areas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the government has changed its mind about introducing<br \/>\nlandlord immigration checks across the board, some areas of the UK<br \/>\nwill still be affected. However, the new scheme will primarily be<br \/>\nfocussed on some boroughs of London where large numbers of immigrants<br \/>\nare known to live, specifically Hounslow and Ealing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recent plans to force landlords in the private rented sector to check the immigration status of their tenants have been significantly watered down.
